Netflix in September: 'First They Killed My Father'

Text Summit Staff

The highlight of the Netflix September schedule is Angelina Jolie's film adaptation of Luong Ung's searing 2000 memoir First They Killed My Father. The highly recommended, critically acclaimed book -- subtitled A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers -- is an account of Ung's young life apart from her family during the horrific Pol Pot regime and survival as a child soldier in a work camp for orphans.

In a profile for People posted earlier this month, Ung says “As a child, I felt I did not have a voice and as a result, I suffered the genocide in silence,” she says. “First They Killed My Father was born out of my desire to reclaim my voice and use it to tell the world of what happened in the genocide and what it took for my family and millions of other families just like ours to survive the war. In writing it, I also wanted the world to know that love, beauty, courage, sacrifice, and the grace of family and humanity exist in our world even in the harshest of times.”

Ung first met Jolie in 2001 when the actress "had just finished filming Tomb Raider in Cambodia, and my book had just been released, so our paths of mutual interests in Cambodia and humanitarian issues crossed.” When she agreed to let her friend adapt her memoir into a film, Ung remembers that “The entire process was humbling. It meant so much to me, and I think, to the country, to make the film in Cambodia, with a Khmer cast and in Khmer (Cambodian language). So many people on set had never spoken about their history and this gave them the opportunity to open up and share.”

September is also the last time Netflix users will have access to Disney films before they're claimed by their own exclusive streaming service, so catch the live-action Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, Mulan and Pocahontas while you can, plus Lilo & Stitch and The Emperor's New Groove expire at the beginning of the month. And fans of the popular Japanese reality series Terrace House (a co-production with Fuji Television) will be happy to know that the latest installment that takes place on Oahu, Aloha State, will premiere later in the month.
